Hedo Turkoglu is set to move his Turkish butt to Phoenix. Here’s the deal there will be a very confusing sign and trade deal with the Raptors, Bobcats and Suns. But in the end the Suns will lose Leandro Barbosa and Dwyane Jones and gain Hedo Turkoglu and Josh Childress.
This is excellent for the Suns. Turkoglu was the most sought after free agent last year after he put the Orlando Magic on his back and brought them to the Finals. He ended up in Toronto because they paid him. But like Chris Bosh, he would rather win than be stuck in a Raptors Uniform.
I like Turkoglu for mainly reasons. He is a great scorer. He can hit a big three when we need him to. He is a playmaker and excellent passer. He can find that open and dish it to him between two defenders, he is very unselfish. But what I like most about him is his kind of lazy style. I remember watching him in the Eastern Conference Finals last year against Lebron. His facial expression made it look like he was just playing the game and having fun. This attitude causes him to be very clutch when time is winding down. Just the type of guy the Suns need.
What I don’t like about Trukoglu is his style of play. He is an outside shooter. I know that he will be a great offensive weapon but the Suns are moving to a very dark area where all of their scoring is coming from the outside. Without Amare there will not be that much of an inside threat. If we go this route, we will live by the three and die by the three.
It could work out though, three key Suns will have to step up. One is Robin Lopez. Last year we saw him come out of his shell and show how he can dominate the paint. He is a giant force down low but he can also get a little nasty down there. The inside game will evolve around him. Two is Channing Frye. Aright man, we paid you now you have to step it up down there. With Frye and Turkoglu the Suns will be one of the best three point shooting teams. But Frye needs to move away from the line and get into the paint a little bit more if the Suns want to be successful. Lastly the new Sun, Hakim Warrick has got to step up. With Turkoglu in the line-up, Warrick will become the post man off the bench. He has got to step up in the second and fourth quarter as a dominating threat inside if the Suns want a chance this year.
All in the entire Turkoglu move was great for the Suns. The Suns needed some offensive power to be added to replace the hole left by Amare. Turkoglu is a great player, I hope he can lead the Suns to an NBA Finals like he did with Orlando.
