The good news just keeps pouring in for the Houston Texans – and that may be bad news for the New York Jets.

Head coach Gary Kubiak indicated Wednesday that star cornerback Dunta Robinson and highly-touted rookie Brian Cushing are probable starters for the team’s season opener Sunday, which could rapidly shore up a Houston defense which has been the team’s biggest concern during training camp.

Kubiak said that, unless something goes wrong during workouts Thursday and Friday, both Robinson and Cushing will be in the starting lineup for the noon kickoff against the Jets at Reliant Stadium, although the staff may limit the number of plays they’re involved in.

"Yeah, if Dunta makes it through Friday clean and looks like he looked today then we've got to make a decision there as a team,” Kubiak said via the team’s daily news release. Cushing “…made a nice play today. Had a turnover today, had a nice pick—was moving around good, adapting to what we're doing gameplan-wise … he'll be ready to go."

Robinson sat out the entire training camp after balking on a contract after being named the team’s franchise player, but signed his tender offer and reported into camp this week. Cushing, the linebacker from Southern Cal who was the team’s No.1 draft pick, is trying to bounce back after a sore knee sidelined him for three weeks.

Kubiak added that the team’s other projected starting cornerback, Jacques Reeves, is also making better-than-anticipated progress after suffering a broken leg which had been expected to keep him out the first several weeks of the regular season.

“He actually practiced some today,” Kubiak said. “So that's a big step in the right direction for him, so we'll see but I think all indications were all along, we were looking at week two.”

The healthier defense, particularly the presence of Cushing, won’t make things any easier for the Jets’ new starting quarterback – Matt Sanchez of Southern Cal. Cushing and Sanchez were roommates for two and a half years at USC.

“We’re very close,” Sanchez told newyorkjets.com. “He is one of those guys on gameday, you just don’t want to get in his way. He’s a tough young man. He’ll be coming full-speed, I know it, off the edge. That’s going to be fun to play against him for real because in practice at SC I was wearing that yellow jersey so he couldn’t touch me, but now it’s on.”

Cushing has equal admiration for his old roomie.

“He's a real competitive kid,” Cushing said. “He's in the perfect system and he flourished. He's doing well already which has surprised a lot of people, but not me. I expected him to do well. He's a great leader and he'll be ready come Sunday.”

The Texans still have two starters slowed by injuries: wide receiver Kevin Walter ans safety Eugene Wilson. Kubiak said the possible absence of Walter is a big concern because of the way he complements Andre Johnson.

“Am I worried about it? Yeah,” Kubiak said. “Obviously, because he hasn't practiced yet. He and Eugene have worked with (head athletic trainer) Geoff (Kaplan) on the side. Obviously, for them not to be on the field today, on Wednesday, it's a day-to-day situation, but they're not here today.”

If Walter can’t go, David Anderson will likely get the starting nod. Veteran Nick Ferguson will start in place of Wilson if necessary.

david anderson is the slot receiver. andre' davis is the backup and he will be starting if walter cannot go. the unofficial depth chart on houstontexans.com is not accurate.
