Golf minus Tiger = well, I'm not exactly sure...

Okay, I know I'm stating the obvious at this point, but as the round-the-clock "Tiger-watch" continues on every major sports network, it's becoming painfully clear just how much the sport of golf needs Tiger Woods. Has any sport ever been more dependent on a single athelete? As if there were any doubt beforehand, the events of the past few months have confirmed that Tiger has ALL the power in that relationship. Golf minus Tiger is like Dane Cook minus the F-word. It's normally somewhat entertaining, but without Tiger, it's about as exciting to watch as a bunch of boring white guys playing...well....golf.

Other sports have had problems filling the vacuum left by a departing megastar in the past, but I would argue that no sport has ever been as lost as golf without Tiger. Sure, the NBA is just now filling the void left by Jordan, and hockey still hasn't recovered from losing Gretzky and Lemieux, but those sports at least found a way to remain relevant. They had other stars to turn to, filling the gap until the next set of transcendent players came along. Golf doesn't have that luxury. All of their proverbial eggs are in the Tiger Woods basket. And with good reason. There's not a golfer alive who is even remotely as intriguing as Tiger. The fact that he's now the butt of a zillion "Perkins' waitress" jokes only adds to his mystique.

The good news is that Tiger will be back. It might be at The Masters, it might be later this year, but we know he'll return. And then, regardless of his performance on the course, all will be right in the world of golf. At least until Tiger retires...
