Giants Super Win Super Bad for Eagles Fans

While other Eagles fans are worried about what defensive end Trent Cole said on Tuesday, I'm more worried about what the front office and head coach Andy Reid are thinking about the New York Giants winning the Super Bowl after just barely squeaking into the playoffs.

If you didn't hear, Cole made some remarks on Tuesday about the state of the Eagles while signing autographs at an Outdoors Show.

"We had a bad year," Cole said in the understatement of the new millennium.  "We just couldn't pull it off at the last minute.  We were right there, inches away from being great, being dominant, dominant team.  I think some teams are going to be worried about playing us next year."

OK, let's take a step back and realize that it was a player saying this.  What do you expect a player to say?  Any athlete who doesn't believe in himself and his team shouldn't be competing at the highest level in his sport.  Sure, he's delusional, but at least he's got the right attitude.

The problem is that Cole's mindset also reflects that of the Eagles head coach and front office.  And that is the crux of the problem with the Philadelphia Eagles of Andy Reid, owner Jeffrey Lurie, team president and capologist Joe Banner and GM Howie Roseman.  They are all delusional (And arrogant).

It doesn't matter what Lurie said in his news conference about last season's 8-8 record and missing the playoffs being "unacceptable".  The fact that he didn't fire Reid for the worst coaching job since Rich Kotite called Philadelphia home, proves that he believes in what the team is doing.

Lurie, Reid and Roseman have all gone on record saying that the goal is to get into the postseason, where anything can happen.  That is why the Giants Super Bowl win is the worst thing that could have possibly happened to Eagles fans.

You see, now these guys will all sit back and say 'See, we could have won the Super Bowl too.  If we had just made the playoffs, we could have gone on that run.  We were hot at the end.  We beat the Giants.  Just get in.  That's all it takes to win a Super Bowl.'

All that monumental underachieving last season by Reid and the Eagles players will now be swept away by the misguided feeling that it could have been them hoisting the Lombardi Trophy last Sunday.  And I didn't think I could possibly have been more depressed about the just completed NFL season.

Not only did Lurie keep Reid, but Reid also kept offensive line coach turned inexperienced defensive coordinator without a clue Juan Castillo onboard.  They changed nothing, unless you consider replacing the secondary coach a difference-maker.  I don't and neither should you.

Sadly, the Eagles themselves aren't the only people who are delusional about the prospects of this team.  I saw that the Las Vegas oddsmakers have the Eagles as the third favorites to win next year's Super Bowl, behind only the New England Patriots at 5-1 and the Green Bay Packers at 11-2.  The Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers are listed at 6-1.

That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, but it will only make the Eagles more sure of themselves and their stupid idea that they are only "inches away".

They aren't, you know.  "Years away"?  Sure.  "A new head coach away"? Absolutely.  "A new owner and all new front office personnel away"?  Now we're talking.  But, "inches away"?  Not even close.

The Eagles were a pathetic bunch of poorly-coached underachievers who earned their 4-8 record on merit with five blown fourth-quarter leads before they won their last four games.  But even the owner called those wins "fool's gold", because they were over teams with backup and third-string quarterbacks, the overrated Mark Sanchez and the Jets and the immortal Rex Grossman.  Of course the defense looked better against that garbage.  Who wouldn't?

Now that the Giants won a Super Bowl with the worst record of any champion ever at 9-7, the Eagles brass thinks they're close to the ring themselves.

The main problem with that thinking is that the Giants built their team wisely through the draft, while the Eagles under Reid's leadership has come up empty in draft after draft.  That's why they had to waste all that money on over-priced, under-performing free agents last offseason.

While the Eagles were drafting Broderick Bunkley in the first round in 2006, the Giants were taking Mathias Kiwanuka.  In 2007 the Eagles traded out of the first round (Kevin Kolb, remember?), while the Giants took starting cornerback Aaron Ross.  In 2008 the Eagles traded down yet again (Trevor Laws) and the Giants stayed put and took starting safety Kenny Phillips.  And worst of all, in 2009, the Eagles traded up to draft Brandon Graham (Remember him?), while the Giants "settled" for some guy named Jason Pierre-Paul.  I think I'm going to be sick.

I'm sorry Eagles fans, but just when you thought you couldn't possibly feel any worse about a hated division rival winning their second Super Bowl during the Andy Reid era, I've put the cherry on top of this crap sundae (Sunday?) that the Eagles will force-feed us for yet another season.

Thank God pitchers and catchers report in less than two weeks.
