Fleury or Johnson?

Who cares right now? At this time of the year it is all about winning hockey games. So far Brent Johnson has not lost a game and Marc-Andre Fleury has lost three.

Johnson has only given up six goals in four games. His goals against average (GAA) is an impressive 1.49. His save percentage is a whopping 95 percent.

Fleury has given up 10 goals in just three games. His GAA is 3.41, while his save percentage is well below average at 85 percent.

My girlfriend is a fan of sports, but doesn’t get into it as others do. She could even say by looking at these numbers that Johnson is playing better.

It is not important if your “best” goalie isn’t playing. I would rather have Fleury (if he is the number one goalie for the postseason, which I think he will be) be rested for the playoffs instead of being a work horse.

Penguin’s fans forget that Ty Conklin started 30 games while Fleury started 33 games in 2007-08. This was the same season the pens went to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in 16 years.

One reason is because “The Flower” was fresh; he wasn’t dried out. He played well in the postseason except for the series against Washington, where he was average, and of course against Detroit.

So I want people to understand that just because Johnson is getting the playing time now (which he should be) it doesn’t mean Fleury won’t be the man in the playoffs. In the National Hockey League Playoffs, the hot goalie is crucial for any team’s success. For instance, Jaroslav Halak and Stanley Cup champion Antii Niemi. Who? Exactly.
