First Week Of College Football
Written by Godfrey Logan, Monday September 05 2011
The first week of the college football season was one of the best start to a season I can remember. Most of the teams won games they should have won meaning at the bowl season will be one of the most competitive in a long time. And Baylor showed a pulse. I hope the rest of the season will go as swimmingly well making some of the marquee matchups all the more grand though any Notre Dame game won’t seem so marquee. They stink all the way to this side of Lake Michigan in Chicago where Northwestern could be competitive in the Big Ten conference. With Nebraska joining the conference the Big Ten should be on par with conferences like the SEC and the soon to be former Big 12 conference. As usual there was talk of scandal and players suspended. Still those teams performed well in spite of adversity. LSU in one of the best games of the weekend romped over Oregon with several of their players unavailable. Ohio State won their game 42-0 though it was against a weak opponent. There is still question whether or not there will be any Miami Hurricanes players suspended for their game Monday night against Maryland. Hopefully there will be talk of a playoff system if Boise State runs the table and get left out of the National Title game AGAIN. Hopefully with the Ohio State and Miami scandals dealing with players getting inappropriate benefits will be addressed and scholarship athletes will receive stipends considering how much money colleges earn on the backs of their players. Another year where there are questions if Notre Dame will return to its former glory. The answer will be an emphatic no! I remember the days of Lou Holtz. I still hold a special place in my heart for him. In my opinion he was the epitome of ND football for my generation. There are many well known athletic programs that are on the map because of the days when a coach stayed with a team his entire career. Full disclosure I was a huge Notre Dame until I saw a Miami-Florida State game and I became hooked on the “U.” There has yet to be a coach at Notre Dame that can hold a candle to Lou Holtz. If his son Skip Holtz currently at South Florida and has won wherever he has coached. Mind my word there will be another Holtz at the helm in South Bend. In the meantime I will enjoy saying beating Notre Dame is no upset just like Sacramento State beating Oregon State or Richmond beating Duke. All the same the biggest news of the college football season will be the continued dismantling of the Big 12.
