First Division Loss For The Caps
Written by LindseyLovesTheCaps, Tuesday December 29 2009
I was at the Verizon Center for this disaster. Not only did these refs call bogus calls, but the Caps struggled from goaltending on out. Carolina's defense shut the Caps down, and their offense flourished by scoring 3 goals in the first period, and 2 more throughout the rest of the game.
Washington's performance wasn't completely terrible. Mike Green, Eric Fehr and Alexander Ovechkin all put markers up for their team, but the slow generated offense wasn't enough to pull past the Canes and get themselves a win.
After a stunning win over New Jersey, I expected their enthusiasm and energy to continue over, but the Capitals just seemed tired tonight. Their defense couldn't get it out of their own zone for most of the game, and were playing with exhausted legs trying to get a clear for the line change. Carolina controlled the puck the majority of the game, and the best the Capitals got was on their few but useful powerplays. Both Green and Ovechkin's goals were on the Power Play, and were nice shots.
The Capitals made an encouraging come back in the 2nd period, but Carolina took advantage of Washington's weak goaltending for the evening. Jose Theodore seemed out of wack tonight. He was moving lethargicly and his agility was off. He straigtened up towards the end, but his defenders had given up long before his somewhat turn-a-round.
The Caps' next game is against the Sharks in San Jose, hopefully they come out with rejuvinated legs and fast energy. To beat the Sharks, Washington is going to have to have a strong netminder, quick and agile defensemen, and fast forwards who are going to play smart. The puck drops at 10.
For other news, General Manager George McPhee traded both Captain Chris Clark and defensemen Milan Juricina to Columbus to retrieve Jason Chimera who seems to be a quick player who mucks the puck. We'll wait and see if he makes a good addition to this hockey team.
