And for most of us the interest in sports started at a young age.

What brings family and friends together and gives perfect strangers a common interest? It’s sports! And for most of us the interest in sports started at a young age. Maybe it was Boys Club Football or Little League Baseball, or soccer, gymnastics, maybe ice hockey or motor sports! Some activity that you got involved in at a young age. It doesn’t matter what sport a child becomes interested in because it adds to what a child knows.

It allows parents to share an experience with their child and instills strong character and pride in the child. You have to admit there is nothing more impressive than to see a father and son excel in a sport and recognized as great competitors in their field. It’s father like son and for the better when sports are involved.

It’s like starting off as a kid, playing games with hopes and dreams and what we thought was fun is something new we learned, and our parents so proud as they watch over us. While we progress with our education and into a career. You can’t dispute the fact that being involved in sports gives us an edge in achieving other goals in life, not to mention it’s healthy. There are lots of ups and downs along the way, including injuries and disappointments you have to work at something and it takes practice, if you expect to be the best. But it’s all worth the effort. Becoming a pro athlete can be an extremely profitable career and a satisfying life style.

Just a few examples, such as the Manning family, father Archie, number 18, a quarterback, started off with The University Of Mississippi (Ole Miss) and played for the Oilers and Vikings, and 10 years with the Saints. And his son Peyton Manning, who is also a quarterback, led the Colts to a 2007 Superbowl win over the Chicago Bears. Archies’ second son, Eli as the quarterback for the Giants, led them to a 2008 Superbowl win over the New England Patriots. There is also a book written by Archie and Peyton Manning that I recommend, A Father, His Sons and a Football Legacy.

It’s a familiar scenario, keep on trying and believe in yourself!

Athletes don’t take they give, that’s how they’re related. To be a champion they live, like an athlete that’s dedicated. Sure, an athlete may get hurt doing their best to win; they put out an effort, doing what they believe in. Not afraid of some pain, it’s the athlete that gives, with achievement to gain, that’s what an athlete is.

Another sport that lives up to its reputation of courage and discipline is boxing. The Mayweather family comes to mind in this arena. With Floyd Sr. at the helm, and Floyd Jr Mayweather, nick named “Pretty Boy Floyd” they are unstoppable! Floyd Jr total fights 39, wins 39, losses 0, KO’s 25. And what a family. Uncles Jeff and Roger Mayweather both won World Championship Belts. Floyd Jr was trained by his dad and uncles. That’s a family effort to be proud of.

Sports can become a family trait, as with the Ripkens’ in baseball. Cal Sr, 36 years as a coach, manager, player and scout for the Baltimore Orioles. He managed the Parent club for the Orioles of which Cal Jr and Billy played. Cal Jr number 8 played shortstop for the Orioles from 1981-2001.He was known as “Iron Man” and went on to the Hall of Fame. He is ranked number 10 shortstop among the top 50 s.s. rankings. Billy Ripken, who played second base, went on to become famous for his 1989 baseball card.

Another great father and son team are Joe Bryant, nicknamed Jelly Bean and his son Kobe Bryant. They are undisputed basketball heroes, Joe played for the Philadelphia 76ers, San Diego Clippers and the Houston Rockets. Kobe Bryant, is named after Kobe beef from Japan. He helped the Lakers win 3 in a row NBA championships from 2000-2002. Kobe is considered one of the top ten favorite athletes.

And consider these two, Bobby Hull, born 1939 “The Golden Jet”, and his son Brett Hull. Two of hockey’s favorites. Bobby played 18 years with the Chicago Black Hawks and assisted in bringing them to win the 1961 Stanley Cup. Brett played for The Winnipeg Jets and his nickname is, The Golden Brett. Bobby and Brett Hull are the only father and son to achieve more than 50 goals each in a season. Also they are the only father and son to have their numbers retired, number 9, Bobby and number 16, Brett.

Lets not forget motor sports legends.

Last time in second place, it’s your turn to chase. You may have won in the past, but now I’m twice as fast. I’ve got control of my speed, with twice the need. And first place is no fool, he’s cool. He’ll stop and wait and ask for a date, he puts his fans ahead of the pack, we’re on the same track. And when I become a NASCAR idol, I won’t just idle, I’ll rev it up, I’ll go full throttle, I’ll marry a model! You can’t stop a NASCAR racer, they have great skill and love a thrill. They learn it from their Pop, no matter where they start they finish on top.

A great NASCAR family is the Earnhardts, Dale Sr. nicknamed “The Intimidator” and his father racecar driver Ralph Earnhardt, one of the best short track drivers in North Carolina. Ralph also won the NASCAR Sportsman Championship in 1956. Dale Sr. number 3 won 76 races. It was unbelievable; in 1994 he scored his 7th Winston Cup Championship and went on to win the Daytona 500 in 1998. Sadly to say at the 2001 Daytona 500, it was Dale Sr’s. last lap but forever remembered. His son Dale Jr., number 8 also has become a great competitor as a NASCAR driver. Just like his father he has won a Daytona 500. Dale Jr.’s win was in 2004 6 years to the day after his father won that same race.

Maybe it’s true sports are Heaven sent. With them we’re blessed. It’s a form of art, so do something smart. Give the kids a chance. Get them a hat, and a bat, and a baseball glove and see if it’s sports they love!
