ESPN Stop Trying Force Soccer down Our Throats!

I am so sick and tired of some people complaining about American soccer. After the Americans lost to Brazil soccer 3-0 in the Confederations Cup, all the talk was about how weak American soccer is.

You know why American soccer is weak? because no one cares about soccer. Soccer experts have been waiting and saying for years that soccer is going to EXPLOD in this country.

When? When is this soccer explosion coming? Soccer quite frankly is a slow boring game. Believe me, I’ve watched in person and it’s like watching paint dry. It’s not very exciting nor a fun game to watch.

It’s popular around the world because unlike our country, it’s the only game in town. The English don’t have the NFL (not yet anyway), Brazil doesn’t have Major League Baseball, and Mexico doesn’t have an NBA franchise. All they have basically is soccer.

Our country has sports here that have been established for a century or more. It’s hard to break in a new sport when you have several others going on. Ask the NHL how difficult has been for them.

Hockey is a Canadian sport that was bought here to the states. Although, it’s popular in certain American cities like Detroit or Pittsburgh, the rest of the country turns it off. More people are excited about the NFL season two months away then they were about the Stanley Cup.

Although, game seven did garner a lot of ratings this year which should give the NHL hope that maybe their sport isn’t dead after all.

Soccer is finding a hard time because it is competing against established sports. Most American kids grow up wanting to be Peyton Manning or Lebron James not David Beckam. As popular as Becks is around the world, he hasn’t caught fire here. Mainly because I think he is highly overrated as a player. Becks is probably better known for his under wear modeling then his actual play.

Beckam coming to America did nothing for professional soccer here in the states. In his first season for the LA Galaxy, he was hurt most of the time and when he finally played it was a big yawn. Don’t get me wrong, soccer seems to be some what popular among young children, but as a whole it hasn’t totally caught fire among the adults and older kids.

And to be honest, it probably never will be. So, to ESPN and soccer experts around the world, stop trying to force soccer down our throats!

BTW, can we stop with the anti-American rhetoric please? I am not a soccer fan per se, but calling me an ignorant American goes a little bit past the boards. Again, this is not 4Chan. Attack personal claims you disagree with, not millions of people as a whole.

I normally don't enjoy watching soccer. I don't hate on it, it just isn't my thing. However, during the World Cup I watch with great enthusiasm as I enjoy the pageantry of the event. It's an amazing thing to see so many people come together for something. I believe it was the Ivory Coast who PUT A PAUSE ON A CIVIL WAR during the 2006 World Cup. That's pretty goddamn amazing. And to be honest I have been following the Confederations Cup as well. I do not pretend to know what the hell is going on, but seeing and hearing 100,000+ people (and knowing there are millions on top of millions watching around the world) is astonishing to me. Don't like soccer? Cool, don't watch it. There, I solved your problem.

Oh and by the way I think watching golf is more excruciating then having a tooth pulled with no novacaine. Talk about a sport with no action, hit the ball, walk to ball, hit the ball walk to ball, hit the.....zzzzzzzzzzz

U.S.A 2 Spain(The best team in the World)0. If that is not exciting I do not know what is! Any time your country which has been an underdog in this international sport everytime it has a big match beats the number 1 team in the world you have to get excited!

It's funny but for the most part the football/futbol/soccer fans I know are perfectly able to enjoy their sport without having to bash anyone elses. Why are American sports fans so insecure about their homegrown sports?

The sport is still boring and you are right, if the games were 12-10 I might watch it, but it's not. It low scoring, slow action sport. It's hockey on grass. I like my sports with plenty of action not waiting 45 minutes to an hour before the next team scores and if you ask most people on this board would they rather watch the US Open Golf Tournament then Soccer, most would pick golf.

I find it ridiculous that the same person that was involved in a heated conversation by defending women's professional sports is flipping the script and dismissing soccer, the world's most popular sport by far. BamaBabe, do you know there's a women's pro soccer league? Could you go to those ladies and say women should be able to play pro sports except for them? American sports fans are impatient. It why home runs are now appreciated more than a 1-0 pitching duel. Or a 15-play march for a score doesn't draw standing ovations like a 50-yard TD pass. We want instant gratification. Soccer doesn't provide that. You won't see 12-10 shootouts in soccer, much to an American sports fan's dismay. But for one that appreciates soccer are enthralled by the plays that lead to goals, the deft dribbling, and heart-stopping saves. If that's not up your alley, just do what the classic phrase instructs: If you don't like what's on TV, then turn it off.

Soccer is still a long boring game and like I said before it's not that popular here because it can't compete against the more established team sports. I'd rather watch GOLF then soccer.

Oh Please, Americans do not appreciate soccer because like a great many things they do not understand it or cannot do it or both. NFL thats fun to watch but over time one gets bored with tem stopping every 15 seconds to figure out what to do next or sucking down an oxygen bottle during a tv time out after being confronted by an unexpected run of more than 20 yards. Learn the game before you condemn it.... please.

I'm from Uruguay and: 1- ESPN is trying to impose you Soccer, as here, in South America, is trying hard to make us like the NFL, MLB (now, that's an exciting sport! the only sport where you can take a nap while you are playing it ) , Texas hold'em Poker, "the world strongest man" or something like that, lacrosse (wow...what a sport, very cute....) , etc, etc, etc. 2-We (the rest of the world) have a different way to sense things, in life and in sports, we like the hi and lows, the contrasts, you want to be excited all-the-time. , that's one of the reasons why you don't like futbol. But there is no problem, Futbol is the greatest sport of the planet without liking the general of the USA public.

Ahem. USA 3, a very good Egypt team 0. Weak ol' USA moves on while Italy sits at home because they couldn't beat Egypt..... And yes, Spain is most likely going to go medieval on the Americans, but I'd like to thank Landon, Jozy, and Texas boy Clint Dempsey for an absolutely amazing Sunday afternoon.

I couldn't agree more. I am so tired of seeing the most popular game in the world on ESPN. They are wasting valuable broadcast hours that could be filled with staged poker, or classic boxing matches, or idiot sportswriters yelling at each other. Games like the overmatched US vs. Brazil fill the airwaves for a couple of hours, negating the effect of Wednesday night's end-to-end exciting game with Seattle and DC United slugging it out to a 3-3 tie. Or the Egypt 1, Italy 0 game later on Thursday afternoon, a tense affair featuring some of the world's most incredible athletes. And Sunday they'll foolishly be offering up Italy vs. Brazil. I mean, who wants to watch that? Shame on David Beckham for branching out. In fact, shame on anyone who wants to expand beyond the three traditional American sports. There is barely room for hockey, so certainly there is no place for soccer. Remember, a lack of diversity is one of the things that has made this the greatest nation on Earth. So, bad news for you 29,000 people who are showing up every game in Seattle, or you 15,000 who make up the average attendance of every MLS game this season, or you hundreds of thousands who cheer the US National team as it works its way toward the 6th World Cup appearance in a row....Sorry. But Bamababe2k9 has decided that your game is apparently not going to, and I quote, "EXPLOD".
