Eagles-Redskins Postgame: At Least It's Finally Over
Written by B-Dub, Sunday January 01 2012
Well I hope all you Eagles fans who wanted the Eagles to win out, instead of losing their last few meaningless games, are happy now. Their 34-10 win over the Redskins not only cost them at least 15 spots in the April draft, but it also saved the job of Andy Reid and, unbelievable, maybe even the job of defensive coordinator Juan Castillo.
Me? I'm pissed that this team won their last four games to finish the season at 8-8 and are so damn proud of themselves. They talked about how they were the best team in the division because they went 5-1 against the rest of the NFC East, ignoring the fact that they were a .500 team. They talked about how the rest of the NFL was glad they missed the playoffs, as if the rest of the NFL didn't realize they beat garbage teams down the stretch. And they talked about how they were going to take this momentum into next season.
Let's take that last one first because it is the most ridiculous. There is hardly any momentum from one game to the next in the NFL. To think there is any momentum at all from the end of one season to the beginning of the next is laughable. Especially a season that ended with a disappointing 8-8 record.
The rest of the NFL isn't afraid of the Eagles, because the Eagles proved this season that they can't beat any good teams. They only managed wins against the dregs of the NFL. And the Redskins proved that they are one of the worst.
The Redskins came into this game a beaten and battered bunch. They were starting two rookie safeties, two rookies on the left side of their defensive line. They were starting a rookie fourth-stringer at running back. And, oh yea, Rex Grossman is one of the worst quarterbacks in the entire NFL.
Grossman (24 - 45, 256 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT) led the NFL in interceptions and threw another one in this game. But as bad as he played he could have had much better numbers if Santana Moss hadn't dropped a sure 43-yard TD that was placed right in his hands.
The Redskins defense actually played better than the final score would indicate. The game was 13-10 until DeSean Jackson caught a crossing route and raced 62 yards into the endzone. It was one of the truly good passes that Vic (24-39, 335 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT) threw all game.
The Redskins actually held the Eagles to negative 1 yards rushing until about five minutes left in the first half. They actually padded those rushing stats with 6 rushes for 40 yards, which included the last TD of the game on the Eagles last possession. Did I mention that there wasn't a starter on the field for either team during that drive? LeSean McCoy sat out this game with an ankle injury and the Eagles offense looked completely inept without him.
Seriously, this was the worst 34-10 win in the history of the NFL. Heck, the Eagles would have gotten blown out by a good team. The Redskins are not even a bad team. They are one of the worst teams in the NFL and it showed.
The Redskins had a 22-yard punt set up the Eagles first score. They allowed a field goal to be blocked that would have tied the score in the first quarter. They had trouble getting the play into the huddle at the end of the first half and when they completed a pass over the middle, didn't have enough time to get the FG unit on the field for a short attempt. Like I said, this Washington team is one of the worst in the entire NFL, so it was not an impressive win by any stretch of the imagination.
The Eagles defense played a terrible game, but only allowed 10 points because of the Redskins ineptitude and the fact that Grossman stinks. Rookie RB Evan Royster managed 113 yards rushing on 20 carries, proving that the Eagles run defense is as bad as ever.
Then after the game I was even more ticked off by the head coach and the quarterback.
Andy Reid was an arrogant jerk as usual in the postgame press conference. He refused to answer the completely legitimate questions about his future with the team. He wouldn't even answer a question about whether or not he even wanted to remain with the team. He gave short non-answers when questioned about Castillo and his roster. He smugly said he wasn't going to answer any of those questions. God, I am so sick and tired of a guy who has never won a damn thing acting like he is the king of the football world.
It got even worse when Michael Vick stepped to the microphone. Vick proved that he is nothing but a loser and always will be a loser. When asked about the fact that the Eagles led the NFL with 38 turnovers and maybe, just maybe, all those turnovers had something to do with the team missing the playoffs Vick seemed to throw his teammates under the bus to save himself.
"The majority of my interceptions were on tipped balls," Vick said. "There's no way to prevent that." Oh really? I'm guessing his receivers just loved hearing that they were the reason he threw 14 interceptions and only 19 TDs on the year. I'd also love to hear how someone else was responsible for his ten fumbles and the four that he lost? That's 18 turnover and only 19 TDs from Vick this season. This guy is a complete loser and he is proving me right about him with every play and every word that comes out of his stupid mouth.
"The season wasn't decided by the number of interceptions that I threw." Vick also said after the game. Well I beg to differ and the fact that the Eagles are done playing this season before the playoffs start, seem to prove that point. Vick is never going to win a thing with that attitude.
So the Eagles ended the season on a meaningless four-game winning streak over a bunch of bad teams, playing with backups, and they feel great about that. It has saved the job of the head coach who proved over the last 13 seasons that he is incapable of winning a Super Bowl. The big-name players underperformed until all the pressure was off. And their turnover-machine of a quarterback thinks that none of it was his fault.
Yeah, I can't wait until next year. At least the pain and misery of this season is finally over. I couldn't take another week of this team.
