Draft thoughts for our beloved Lions
Written by TCoombe1977, Monday April 12 2010
Over the last decade we have seen it all onb that most glorious of days, the NFL Draft. It has been the biggest day of the year for us as Lions fans. Since we almost always seem to be near the top, and always have the higgest hopes. I confess after last years draft I was a little discouraged. Not because of the first pick, I wanted Stafford and knew he was worthy of the 1st overall pick. Only time will tell if he's worth the Wells Fargo truck we backed up to his house. However, the next pick left me realing with Michael Oher there I almost strocked out when they called Brandon Pettigrew's name out. Then in the second round we saw Rey Maulaga sitting there and I said alright just take Rey, they have to take him, right I mean who else would they take? Then they called Louis Delmas' name. I cried out, waking my poor terrier up out of a dead sleep.
Now I sit here thinking about the upcoming draft, and how everyone seems to have different ideas about what we should do. Now I know there had to be someone out their that thought Pettigrew, or Delmas would be Lions. However, I refuse to believe anyone not associated with the Lions thought they would take both with those other players (Oher, and Mauluaga) still on the board. Looking back I still thinbk Oher should have bneen the pick, but I am not totally discouraged by Pettigrew who really started to turn it up before he got hurt. He looks like a possible Pro Bowler if he continues to develop, and of course can stay healthy. Delmas will be a Pro Bowler and is the heart and soul of the rebuiding defense. He has game changing ability, and I couldn't be happier we took him 33rd overall even with Rey there.
Now we sit on the here on the cusp of a new draft and once again sit right up at the top of the draft. Once again we sit here divided about what to do with the picks we have. Trade down? Take Ndamukong Suh, or Gerald McCoy? Howabout Okung, or Williams? or are you the guy who wants Eric Berry with Delmas in the secondary? Whatever you want the majority has to be for Suh, a gamechanger in the trenches, and for the Lions as close to a sure thing as your gonna get in the draft. I think that the Lions will try and trade down, and I believe they have offers already from teams looking to move up. The question is will they do it? I honestly believe that the will hold at #2 and take Suh. Unless a blockbuster trade is offered up at the last minute I think and hope he Lions hold tight.
Second round is where it gets a little more enticing. Remember that there is going to be a whole day between the first and second rounds. Players who drop out of the first round will amaze someone. They will also have a whole day to foam at the mouth over them, and also talk trades. Teams like New Enland with multiple second round picks might look to move up, and if we do see a trade down I think it happens on the second day. Now players we could get are so varying that if I tried to list them all I would have to break it out in volumes. So I will just tell you what position I think we should take.
In this draft it seems to me that the cornerbacks seem extremly deep. Especially in second and third round projections. I think that if Mayhew, and Lewand hold to their previous plan that this is where they find the most value. We all saw last year how the best player available philosophy worked out. Not to bad since we got our starting QB, TE, S, MLB, and DT not to mention two great young special teamers that could provide valuable backups. If it ain't broke don't fix it right?
Third round I see them also looking to trade down, with hopefully some extra picks already in hand. Looking at the previous value based picks I think the scales have to be tipped in the runningback positions favor. We could see some amazing players with OLB's a close second. Since we seem a little better off at the OLB spot I think the RB wins out and hope to see us get a Joe McNight, or Dexter McCluster in the third round.
Rounds four through seven are a crap shoot at best anyways. The grade of drafts are almost always weighted on the first three picks. I know after last years draft that I can only hope that we get a future Pro Bowl DT in Suh, a good starting cornerback, and a number two, possibly #1 running back. I also know after last years draft that I will probably be disappointed, but I can honestly say I hope I am. If they keep on taking the best player available we can't go wrong, and in the long run it will all come together.
So go ahead Lewand, shake us up a bit. Do your thing and take who you want, and I'll remember to take a chill pill, and keep my hopes up. Build this team the right way and get the one thing we have lacked for ten years. Talent.

How could the Lions NOT take an OT first? The franchise QB is unprotected and the running game is weak despite a good RB in Kevin Smith. A top LT solves both problems. I mean, duh, right?
