Donovan Approaching 100 Career Goals

Landon Donovan has been in the MLS for quite some time now.  His play in the World Cup this summer propelled his popularity even further.   He scored the greatest goal in United States history, one that gave a desperate team a win and a trip to the elimination round.  Before that many outside of the greater Los Angeles area knew him as ‘the guy that played with Beckham’.

However, Donovan has always been a lot more than that.

Donovan is on the first place Galaxy, who have yet to lose a game at home, including a 2-2 tie last night with the San Jose Earthquakes.  Donovan scored in the 90th minute when he tapped in a rebound to ensure the tie.  It was career goal number 99 for the 28-year-old forward, which he scored in front of a national audience.

He joined the league in 2001 with the San Jose Earthquakes, winning two MLS Cups before his rights were traded away to the Los Angeles Galaxy.  With the Galaxy, Donovan won another MLS Cup and leading the team to another one.

Currently, he ranks sixth all time in regular season goals in MLS history, and needs just three more to move into sole possession of fifth.  He has his work cut out for him if he wants to be the all time leader in goals though as he needs 34 more to pass Jaime Moreno, who spent his career with D.C. United.

Donovan was asked last night about what the milestone would mean to him, but failed to talk about it, instead discussing his team’s play after the tie.

The big news recently surrounding Donovan is how much longer he will remain in the MLS, with many European clubs trying to lure him away with big contracts.  However the president of the league insists that they will not let their star attraction get away.

If he stays with the Galaxy, it seems inevitable that by the time he retires he will be the greatest player in their history, and all time leader in goals.

Now the wait is on to see how long it takes him to reach the milestone.  The Galaxy have a friendly match this Tuesday, and then continue their regular season when they host the Chicago Fire Sunday, August first.
