Diaw and Henderson Shoot Lights Out

Last night’s game had great ball movement, great defense, and clutch shooting.  Oh wait; I forgot  that this article is not about my Alma Matter, the Temple Owls who beat the Duke Blue Devils.    Last night’s Knicks game was another disgusting display of professional basketball.

Once again, the Knicks displayed atrocious defense, poor shot decisions at key times in the game, and awful play from the starting backcourt of Fields and Douglass (combined – 18 PTS, 7 AST, and 7 TO).  Normally the Knicks play defense for 3 of the 4 quarters of the game.  Last night they decided to change that and play defense for less than half of the game.  At the NBA level, basic defense should not be a skill that needs to be taught to the players.  The Bobcats shot lights out.  Why?  Because the Bobcats were able to take a lot of shots where there was not a Knicks defender within 3 feet of the shooter.

The Knicks allowed Boris Diaw who was averaging 8 PPG going into last night’s contest to score 27 PTS on 12-15 shooting.  Of the 12 shots he made, 2 were “difficult shots”.  Gerald Henderson scored 24 PTS on 10-13 shooting.  Henderson had 3 difficult shots.  The bottom line is Gerald Henderson and Boris Diaw should not be names that contribute to why you lost a game you should win...EVER.   The Knicks made Diaw and Henderson look like Jordan and Pippen.

Folks, I am a “glass is always half full” kind of guy.  With the lockout, the Knicks did not have time to play with each other.  They are also missing Baron Davis who will run the point the right way.  One of my good friends, a fellow die-hard Knicks fan said they are going to need 15-20 games together before you can tell what type of team the Knicks are.  I sure hope my friend is right.  The Knicks have 9-14 more games to get things in gear.  I just hope they realize there is one thing they need to do right away - PLAY DEFENSE.   I was watching the pre-game show and almost fell off my chair when I heard D’Antoni say to the troops, “Just shoot the ball…".  Newsflash coach, that's all they do (35 3PT attempts vs. Toronto and 29 3PT attempts vs. Charlotte). How about yell, “JUST PLAY DEFENSE”.
