Brenham, Texas is one of the most unique baseball communities in the entire state. Often referred to as the Baseball Capitol of Texas, Brenham has been setting the bar in High School Baseball for nearly 60 years dating back to 1952 and their first play-off appearance. In those 58 years the Cubs have made 51 play-off appearances, and won 27 District Championships, made 15 State Tournament appearances, and won 7 State Championships.
Brenham’s most recent State Championship (2010 4A State Championship), was a team that featured one of the most dominating pitchers in Cubs history, Chase Wellbrock who compiled an 18-0 record in 2010 and was the winning pitcher in the State Championship Game.
The Cubs lost the golden arm of Wellbrock to graduation and 6 others (Weiss, Hall, Spivey, Preuss, Maynard, & Weinschenk) who were all key components in the Cubs championship run. But Brenham is Brenham, and Coach Long and company just seem to reload with talent waiting in line.
The Cubs return amazing talent from the 2010 Championship Team in Drake Roberts (Pre-Season All American, All District, All Brazos Valley, Area Code Games 2010, signed with Arkansas), Chance Bolcerek (Baseball Ameria All America, All District MVP, All Brazos Valley, signed with Texas A&M), Ty Schlottmann (All Brazos Valley, All District, signed with Texas A&M), and Walla, all of whom are signed to play at the next level. Also returning is Zach Jacobs who would have started last year for a multitude of other teams as well as Collin Crenshaw who missed the 2010 season with an injury. Jeremy Zettel stepped in and helped out last year and could be a big part of the Cubs success in 2011. Corey Bentke, and Dillon Knebel are solid and will likely see plenty of action in the upcoming season.
The up and coming players for the Cubs could provide just what the doctor ordered in perpetuating Brenham’s success. Junior Eric Stegent is a huge RHP/1B who can dominate on the mound and swings a big bat. Junior Dalton Baird is a solid backstop who can provide Coach Long, and Staff, high quality depth at the catcher position. Jesse Baker, Shea Nutt, and Garrett Webb are all solid and could contribute at a high level for the Cubs.
Needles to say, the Cubs district 17-4A foes will have their work cut out for them if they are to defeat the defending State Champs. And although the Cubs lost a great deal of talent in the class of 2010, the future looks very bright for Brenham in 2011 and beyond.
