David Weir targeted by German side Bremen
Written by FrankOrtgies, Friday January 07 2011
You think David Weir is old? Well, so did I, but apparently the trusty central defender is still sought after by teams from the continent.
Old colleagues in the Rangers 'press corps', for lack of a better term, have told me quite clearly that German side Werder Bremen are planning to sign Rangers' very own David Weir. Well, apparently for half a season only, but some basic research shows that the Northern Germans have some significant injury problems on the position of central defender.
Their usual starter, Brazilian Naldo, appears to be out for the season after already having missed the first half of it due to an unspecified knee injury. So Bremen, arguably in danger of relegation in the fiercely contested German league, have an urgent need of an experienced player on that volatile position. They did sign former Man Utd player Mikael Silvestre in the summer but he has not been making a big impression in Germany so far.
The Werder does need an experienced central defender and they him now. This is why the 40-year-old Weir might in fact be a decent solution to their problems. He will easily agree to a contract over just half a year. The club can thus pursue its strategy for the future without any change on their prospective squad for the 2012 season. Weir on the other hand will have the chance to play in Europe for once to round off his career. With the money certainly not being that bad in Germany, either.
