Capitals vs. Sabres -- December 9, 2009
Written by LindseyLovesTheCaps, Wednesday December 09 2009
Recap of Capitals Hockey.
The Capitals are hoping to make this meeting with the Buffalo Sabres another W on their six game winning streak. Unfortunately, I missed the first period due to an event for my school, but I turned on the game right when the second period started.
This period has been pretty slow or as Craig Laughlin likes to say "lacks flow," desipite the first period goal by Montador.
Both teams have had decent chances, but nothing major. Ovechkin had Goaltender Ryan Miller beat, but coughed up the puck right at the last minute. At 6:28 left in the 2nd, Mike Green takes a tripping penalty and heads off to the box.
The Sabres have been 0 for 2 on both of their power plays today. Nathan Gerbe puts Buffalo's second tally on the board with a dribble in just through Jose Theodore's legs.
The Sabres have been 10-0 when leading by two. Just over two minutes after the Sabres' third power play, The game goes to 4 on 4 hockey, with Ovechkin in the box for embellishing a trip, and Roy in the box for committing the trip.
The Sabres score with two minutes left in the period, making it 3-0. The Caps, still looking a little sloppy in the third period, have 18 minutes to score 3+ goals to either tie or win this game in regulation. Buffalo's defense have been collapsing in on open lanes and pressuring in all the right places.
The only chances the Caps can muster up are hard angled shots that would rarely get past the goal keeper, Ryan Miller, who has been perfect so far in this game. Brendan Morrison gets a superb chance, but the red hot Ryan Miller robbed him of a lay up. Miller again with an excellent stop against the Caps, who are desperate for just one marker to get their offense rolling.
With only 11 minutes left, Washington has to get moving if they want ending results in their favor. 16 minutes into the period hasn't proved sufficient for the Capitals.
The score remains 3-0, and as hard as they try, the Caps just can't get anything by the Buffalo Netkeeper. The final score is 3-0, Ryan Miller being the key to this stellar victory for the Buffalo Sabres.
The last time the Capitals were on the receiving end of a shut out was January ninth of this year. The final score was 3-0 against Steve Mason and the Blue Jackets.
Just an observation: Although Perreault doesn't score often, his speed and presence seems to give a little something extra to Washington's offense. Without him, there is a sluggishness about the Caps, continuing to show during the final attempt to step up their offense and get a few goals.
Injured: Semyon Varlamov - Groin ... Mike Knuble - Finger ... Brian Pothier? - left in middle of game.
