Capitals vs. Hurricanes -- December 11, 2009
Written by LindseyLovesTheCaps, Friday December 11 2009
Everyone expects Washington to crush Carolina. They have the worst record in the NHL, and the Caps are 7-0 when playing division rivals.
Within the first three minutes, the fan's got a little different from what they expected. Hurricane's Jiri Tlusty had an easy tap-in on a 2 on 1. Mike Green was "Ka-bonged" in Washington's offensive zone, and went down in a heap on the ice.
By the time he was back on his feet, Carolina had already taken control and was halfway to Washington's goal tender, Jose Theodore. Despite the score, the Caps have come out playing pretty fast paced hockey, with Mike Knuble in the line up, they're hoping to make it 8-0 against the division. With 6:02 left in the first, Eric Staal tries to wrap the puck around the cage. It works.
he first shot is stopped by Theodore, but the rebound is deflected...off the goaltender's helmet and into the net. Late in the 2nd, the Caps got their chance to tie it up with a power play. It went on without a goal, but Semin would soon score and put a marker on the board for Washington, making the score 2-1 Carolina.
The Canes go on the power play for the Washington penalty of too many people on the ice. Their first shot was saved, but the puck was kicked in, underneath a scrambling Jose Theodore, and was washed out by the refs. The score is now 2-2 at the end of the 2nd.
With two goals by Alexander Semin, the Capitals came out flying in the 3rd period. About a quarter way through the period, Mathieu Perreault makes an incredible pass through the offensive zone in front of the crease to Tomas Fleischmann. Flash slows down the slapper and wails it in, top shelf, just gliding past Cam Ward's raised glove. The score is now 3-2 Caps.
With 8 minutes left in the period, Carolina goes a man down with a Washington power play. With a turnover by Washington, penalty killer Tim Gleason has a swift take-a-way, sprints down the ice, and scores on a supris
Now, with 2 minutes left in the period, the score stays tied 3-3. Neither team could put the puck past their opposing goaltender, so the game goes into a 5 minute overtime, then the shoot out. No need for a shoot out in this game. Mike Green goes back door, with the puck flying past Cam Ward, who didn't seem to see it coming.
he Caps advance to the lead of 46 points in the NHL, ahead of San Jose by just two points. This keeps their record perfect against division rival teams. Congrats to Alexander Semin, Tomas Fleischmann and Mike Green for pulling out a win against the Canes.
Next game: Tomorrow night, 7 p.m. --- Toronto, Maple Leafs.
Good Luck!
