Canadians Capture Gold and Celebrate

The Women's Canadian team defeated their U.S. rivals 2-0 to capture the gold. But the controversy seems to have come from the on-ice celebration. Beer, cigars, and champagne were all part of a giant party on the ice. It is a common scene in professional locker rooms, and in recent years, there have been examples of the party spilling on to the field. I remember watching the 2004 Red Sox defeat the New York Yankees in the ALCS after trailing three games to none. No team had ever come back from that defecit, so the team made a point out of bringing the party onto the hallowed Yankee field. One week later, the Sox ended their 86 year drought without a World Series Championship. This time, the party was on the St. Louis field.
Perhaps the Canadian women beating their U.S. rivals, in their own country, led the women to want to share the party with their fans. Hockey Canada apologized on Thursday for the excessive celebration.
There are different opposing thoughts. Some say the only thing worse than a bad loser is a bad winner. And another adage is to "act like you have been there before". But maybe, they never have been there before and never will be again. Yesterday, I commented about poor sportsmanship in a losing effort by Julia Mancuso. But if you say that you can not show the negative emotion as Mancuso did, and then also complain about the Canadian Women's party, then you start to take the emotion out of the Olympics. It might even start to be like the NFL, or No Fun League, which discourages and penalizes excessive celebrations.
In my view, this is the Olympics, and many athletes only have one shot at the gold. Add to that a win over your neighboring rival, on your own ice. Party on, Canada Women's Hockey.
