BC Bowled Over By USC

USC defeated Boston College 24-13 in the Emerald Bowl.

It did not start well for BC, as they had a penalty before they even ran a play from scrimmage.  Then they lost yardage on their first attempt to run.  The Eagles did manage to move the ball into USC territory before the drive stalled out.

USC did not have those kinds of problems on the field to start the game.  They scored on their first two drives to take a 14-0 lead.  Off the field, they did have some technical problems as Pete Carroll could not get his headset to work.  Now, it is not a rule that the other team has to give up their headset, but a gentlemen's agreement.  Seriously?  In a bowl game?  The USC equipment malfunctioned, and BC has to suffer?

Another questionable decision by Carroll was playing Shareece Wright, who was ineligible for all of the season.  Forget about going with the ones that brought you to this part of the season.  Although maybe USC had trouble trying to decide who they could play as some of the players that had brought them there were being declared ineligible.  Wright had an interception late in the game that helped put the game away for USC.

Back to the early part of the game.  Trailing 14-0, the Eagles finally got the ground game going.   The rushing attack had negative yards in the first quarter, but on their third possession.  Montel Harris led the drive down field as the Eagles got on the board.  After the TD, kicker Steve Aponavicious came on to kick the extra point.  The ESPN radio crew talked about how this walk on player one time was a fan in the stands at the heights.  The extra point attempt failed.

BC did score again in the second quarter to bring the game to 14-13.  They had the ball at the end of the quarter, but elected to run out the clock, happy to be down one at the half.  Why?  They had momentum.  They ended up not scoring in the second half.

Maybe it does not matter.  It's just another in a series of bowls that mean very little.  And probably USC was going to win anyway.  .  No point in getting bitter about it.  It is the day after Christmas.

Oh, and by the way MCHomer, the check is in the mail.
