Preview of Cubs/Brewers matchup.

Before you get down to your Daytona odds on Saturday night, there is another possible explosion brewing at Wrigley Field on Friday afternoon, when the Cubs will host the National League-leading Milwaukee Brewers. There is always a chance of fireworks when Carlos Zambrano takes to the mound, but betting software should have him favored in this contest.

Brewers Cubs Odds - Friday, July 4, 2:20 PM ET

Jeff Suppan (5-6, 4.86) was rocked for five runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings of a 7-0 loss at home to San Francisco, and he has now given up 12 runs in his last 10.2 innings of work. The Cubs haven't been kind to him either, as the 34-year-old righthander has lost both of his starts against Chicago in 2009, posting a 7.45 ERA. Maybe he just needs to play them away from home; on the road, Suppan is 4-1 in nine outings with a 3.96 ERA.

Zambrano (4-3, 3.69) lost for the first time in just over a month as the Cubs fell 6-0 on the road to the rival White Sox, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits in 5.1 innings. He threw a season-high 118 pitches in a 6-5 win at Milwaukee in his second start of the year, giving up three runs on seven hits over six innings, but he took a no-decision. Four of Zambrano's last five starts have come on the road, so he'll be returning to Wrigley, where he is 1-1 with a 4.45 ERA in five starts.

Baseball lines should the Cubs as a favorite in the second of a four-game series between these division rivals, and for all of their problems (particularly at the plate), Chicago is only 3.5 games behind the Brewers ahead of the series opener on Thursday. The Cubs seem to have Suppan figured out, and while he won't pitch as badly as his numbers suggest, the veteran will be still winless against the Cubs by the end of nine innings. Meanwhile, Zambrano would like to bounce back from a poor effort, and if he gets the run support, he'll shut down the Brewers. Make the Chicago Cubs one of your baseball picks on Friday.
