Athletes and Guns

As most of you know, I’m an African-American and it disheartened me to hear that another black athlete had another gun incident. This time, it was Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards.

From what I’ve know of Arenas, he seem to be not only a pretty good player, but a decent guy as well. That’s why when I heard he pulled a gun out on his teammate, I was pissed and disappointed.

I thought after the Plaxico Burress thing, that athletes, especially black athletes would have learned their lesson by now; apparently not.

What I am so angry about is Arenas is giving yet another black eye so to speak to not only himself, but other black athletes and the NBA in general. The NBA has fought so hard to change its image and here we are once again dealing with another stupid player pulling a stupid stunt.

It also makes me mad, because like Burress, Arenas could be looking at some jail time. He tried to play it off like it was a joke, but this is not laughing matter.

Somebody could have gotten hurt over this foolishness and it’s time to put a stop to it. I don’t give a damn if you need guns to protect yourself as some players have said, if you need that kind of protection, then you need to stay your behind at home and bring the party to you.

When players like Arenas does this kind of crap, it makes people like Rush Limbaugh very happy because he has basically said that the NBA is full of thugs and when stuff like this happens, it just makes his point. It makes those who hate the NBA say “See this is why I don’t like the NBA because of its players.”

Hell even Al Sharpton has come out today and said the NBA needs to come down hard on Arenas and basically make him an example. I agree. If nothing else to prove they are serious about guns and violence in the NBA. If the NBA doesn’t at least suspended Arenas for a few games, it will be sending the wrong message.

I hope it doesn’t take someone dying for the NBA and other major league sports to clean up their act for this message to be taken seriously.
