Asian Carp--Horror of Horrors!

Welcome to a real life horror movie, and the star is called the Asian or Silver Carp. The fact that it’s a carp is bad enough, but this carp in particular, is absolutely horrific! It has taken over much of the lower-mid Mississippi and Illinois rivers, and this movie is coming to a theater near you.

This is the famous flying fish of the river, and fly they do. Whenever a boat passes near them, they take off like aircraft, and launch themselves into the air. And while this may sound funny on the surface, these fish can weigh 20 and 30 and 40 pounds, so if they fly through the air and hit someone, they are going to do damage.

These carp are an invasive species that were imported from China to eat the algae in ponds. Somehow, someway, they got into some of our main rivers, and they began to reproduce. Because they are from China, they have no natural enemies, so they bred like flies, and have literally taken over rivers and tributaries.

As late as December of 2008, an Asian Carp was hauled up in a net in the upper Mississippi, around LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and it won’t be long before they make it all the way into Canada.

They are a scourge, a pest, a plague that are destroying the river habitat for native species, and no one knows how to stop them. Run a boat through a school of them, and literally hundreds will leap out of the water, some landing in the boat! So far, they haven’t been able to be stopped.

There is one hope. They are actually good eating fish, if cleaned right. The Chinese consider them a delicacy, and have netted them almost to extinction in China. And that’s where the hope lies. It’s called commercial fishing.

Although not very profitable to catch, the sheer numbers that are able to be netted have been doubling the income of commercial fisherman. They are essentially netted, processed, and then shipped back to China, where they are gobbled up by the locals out there. That is, I believe, the secret to ridding our waters of this scourge. Eating them.

This horror movie could have a happy ending, but the time to get a handle on these invaders is now. If anyone wants to get into commercial fishing for Asian Carp, it’s a sure way to make incredibly good money, as well as a sure way to rid our rivers of this horror of horrors!

Thanks for joinin’ me!
