Arena football, great American sport

The Arizona Sports Hub: Edmund Hubbard
Loud metal music, a mascot on a motorcycle, multiple touchdowns and all of this in an arena usually meant for basketball. Where does this all take place at an Arena Football game. Last Friday a friend of mine and I went and bought tickets to an Arizona Rattlers game. I thought it would be cool but I was not getting my hopes up. But at the end of the night I realized how great the Arena Football League is.
One reason it is great is because it is football. Football is my favorite sport. It is what I played, what I love to watch and my favorite thing to write about. When the NBA playoffs ended, I thought to myself, “Here we go, now it is the most boring time to be a sports fan.” When there is nothing on but baseball, being a sports fan sucks. I need some action and excitement. I need some football. The AFL gives crazy football fans, like me something to watch in the summer other than if Brett Farve is going to make another comeback.
I think that the greatest part of the Arena Football League is what it offers. It gives guys a chance to, “make it.” A coach of mine at my high school was a tremendous college wide receiver. His name was Chris Horn. But he was over looked in the draft because he wasn’t very big and went to a small school. He found a home with the Arizona Rattlers. Pretty soon he was breaking records all over the place. He used his AFL film to land him a tryout with the Kansas City Chiefs. He ended up making the team. Guys like Chris Horn and Rod Windsor need to AFL to get a chance at the big time. Remember the name Rod Windsor, he just broke the all time record for catches in a season in the AFL. I would not be surprised if he is in the NFL next year.
Lastly, an AFL team is great for the community. When I went to the game on Friday I thought I would not see a soul in the stands, but I was wrong. The Rattlers have a following. Then I started to look at the cities where these arena teams played, I found out that Phoenix was an anomaly. Most cities were not metropolises. Cities like Oklahoma City, Des Moines and Spokane can have a pro team. Their communities can be a part of something together.
All in all I loved my experience with Arena Football. I think it is an under rated American sport and I hope it stays.
