Let me take you back a couple of years ago. The Suns are in the lottery and we draw the name of a big stud coming straight out of high school. Amare comes to town and gets rookie of the year honors. It looked like the Suns were going to build the team around the new guy.
Fast forward to now. Amare is gone. He wanted more money and we did not give it to him. The Suns did not want to give him five years on account of his bad knee and bad eye. Pretty soon Amare will have a peg leg and an eye patch. He would be more suited to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or Pittsburgh Pirates.
So Amare is gone and it is tough because we have seen the kid grow up in Phoenix. Remember he was only 18 when he came here. I remember he brought his kids to my uncle’s pool. He truly was a local guy and he was always good to the fans. But we just have to let him go.
My prediction is that the New York Knicks are not going to land LeBron James. They picked up Amare as kind of a consolation prize. We pretty much gave Amare to the Knicks. My hope is that we get something in return and Amare is part of some kind of sign and trade with the Knicks organization. I want the Suns to get a Knicks player named David Lee.
Knicks forward David Lee is also affected by this free agency fiasco. If the Knicks want to land a max contract guy, they cannot afford David Lee. My hope is that the Knicks sign Amare and trade David Lee to us. I remember watching the Christmas day opening act game between the Heat and the Knicks. David Lee was the only bright spot on the Knicks roster. The guy averaged 20 points and 10 rebound per game this season. He is a great offensive force and beats Amare in one key stat rebounding.
Amare came under a ton of heat this playoff. This was not because of his scoring, but because Odom, Gasol and Bynum were dominating him on the boards and on defense. I believe that Lee will fit great into Gentry’s game plan and his defense and rebounding will help the team tremendously. Who knows, maybe Lee can be our rebound guy for the great Standing Tall and Talented.
