AFC East Week 6 Review

Week 6 featured a blowout victory by the Patriots as they took over first place.  The Bills surprised the Jets in overtime and the Dolphins were on a bye.

New England or Boston Patriots 59, Tennessee Titans dressed as Houston Oilers 0

There have been two interesting opinions I have heard in the aftermath of this game.

1) The Patriots offense is back

Well, maybe.  But it also could have something to do with the fact that the Titans did not have any defensive backs to stop the Patriots.  Or that the winter conditions give an advantage to a player on offense that is running a route vs. the defender that is trying to stop him.  With the Buccaneers on the horizon in London, there won't be an answer until after the bye.

2) Why did the Patriots run up the score?

This does not seem like a fair accusation, but I heard it said on some late night talk national shows.  It seems if the Pats wanted to run up the score, they would have scored 80 or even 90.  As it was, Tom Brady  came out in the 3rd.  The Pats were up 45-0 at halftime.  It should not be their fault that the Titans did not show up.

The bad news for New England fans was that winter arrived very early.  It was the earliest snowfall in history in Foxborough, Ma.  The good news is that the Patriots play very well in snow, and certainly showed it in their record setting performance.  Brady had 5 TDs in the second quarter alone.  For some QBs, that could be a month of Sundays.  Meanwhile, Kerry Collins was heading in the opposite direction, completing 2 of 12 for -7 yards total.

Buffalo Bills 16 New York Jets 13 (OT)

Remember the old days of week 3?  Mark Sanchez won his first three starts.  Rex Ryan was having great success at the helm of the Jets.  Then came a week 4 loss to the Saints.  But that was understandable, the Saints are off to a great start.  Then a thrilling back and forth fourth quarter loss to Miami and the wildcat offense, but it was in Miami so it seemed OK.  But now, a loss at home in a game where Sanchez threw 5 ints, the result is the Jets fall out of first place, but more important is that they are looking for answers to get back on track.

Miami Dolphins (bye week)

The Miami Dolphins had the bye this week.  After dropping the first three, Miami headed into the break winning two in a row, including the exciting win over the Jets on Monday Night.  During the broadcast, the ESPN crew took a look at the list of QBs Miami has used since the retirement of Dan Marino.  The long list includes trades, free agents, and draft picks.  The Dolphins started the season with Chad Pennington, but have found success since he went out with an injury and Chad Henne took over.  Coming out of the break, the 2-4 Dolphins have the Saints, a rematch with the Jets, and the Patriots.  The defending East champs could still make something out of the season, but the next three weeks will be quite a test.

Next week...

The Patriots hop across the pond to play Tampa Bay in London.  The Jets travel across the country to take on Oakland.  Miami hosts the Saints, and the Bills are like James Taylor, going to Carolina (in my mind).
