A Red Sox Fan Strikes Back
Written by Chriso, Wednesday March 17 2010
Woke up this morning, and it's a beautiful day in Virginia Beach. Bright sun shine, I had a nice glass of OJ, and sat down to the computer. What could ruin this quality start?
Quit your whining. (Yankee article attached)
A post by a Yankee fan telling me to stop whining. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. I was preparing my comments, then I realized I needed more space, and wrote this reply.
First, there is this quote: "Now say your Brian Cashman, the Yankees GM," Brian Cashman is not mine. Next quote: "He got an ace, C.C Sabbathia, another pitcher, A.J Burnett, and a first baseman, Mark Texeira." I've heard of Burnett, but who is Sabbathia or Texeira? Any relation to Sabathia and Teixeira? Another quote: "For these an other reasons they have the money to spend." I guess Yankee fans drop the letter d the way Bostonians drop the letter r.
But enough about picking on a Yankee fan for poor grammar and bad spelling, that is like shooting fish in a barrel. How about going after some facts. There was a comment that the Yankees "draw the most fans on the road". In 2007, the Red Sox finished first in road attendance ahead of the Yankees. In 2008, Boston was again first, the Yankees finished fifth. In 2009, the Cubs were the first team. Why let facts get in the way of a good argument?
Another statement: "They sell around 4 million tickets a year." Well, that one is close. In 2008, the Yankees sold 4,298,655. In 2009, the Yankees sold 3,674,495. I've heard of rounding up, but that is increasing the 2009 totals by nearly 10%. Also, it shows a drop in attendance of over 600,000 in a season when the Yankees opened a new stadium and won the World Series. A drop in attendance of 15% would kill many franchises.
Hey, I am not going to complain about the money the Yankees spend. The Red Sox are another team that is one of the big spenders. But when you want to interrupt my morning and tell me how great your team is, try and get the facts straight. And learn how to spell the names of the big stars that your team overpaid to get.

He still is wrong about the Yankees drawing the most on the road, and the decrease in attendance at home is an embarrassment...

I too read his article. While his grammar is horrible, he is right. As a fellow Red Sox fan in Maine, we (The Sox) will continue to be hard pressed to match the Yankee payroll. Then again we shouldn't have to.

Hmm... what to say, what to say... Well, if you're going to brag about your team being the best, facts, spelling and grammar are important - you don't want anyone thinking you're a fool. But if you're a Yankees fan, people already think that anyway. All very good points, Chriso.
