A Championship Collapse

On Friday Night we as Philadelphia Phillies fans did not expect this team to get beat in Game 5 at home and especially 1-0. Well it happened and it was the worst feeling ever because you knew that this team's offense had went cold and that the championship season was over as well.

St.Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter had kept the Phillies under wraps by holding them to only three hits in the game but only striking out three. The Phillies couldn't really get on base and when they did it was only for a short amount of time. Phillies CF Shane Victorino had two out of the three Phillies hits. It just seemed like this team couldn't catch a break.

The only bright spot from this game for the Phillies side was pitcher Roy Halladay who pitched the game of his playoff career excluding his no hitter he threw in the 2010 NLDS vs the Cincinnati Reds. Halladay threw eight innings, gave up six hits, struck out seven but only gave up one run. He did it all in this game and he got out of a tough first inning and eighth inning, but the Phillies offense couldn't prevail.

Just as the 2010 NLCS ended versus the Giants so did the 2011 NLDS versus the Cardinals. But this time Ryan Howard hits a grounder to the second basemen and while trying to get to first base he falls and ruptures his left achilles.

So this season ends in disappointing fashion but there were good things from this season. We saw the emergence of rookie pitcher Vance Worley and outfielder John Mayberry Jr. who both will play essential roles in the seasons to come. We saw the young arms in the pen of Stutes, Bastardo, De Fratus, and Savery step up. This team has a lot of young talent and a bright future ahead but before you get to that, you have to sign your older players which might not be back and who have might played their last game as Philadelphia Phillies.
