A Baseball Fan's View On Brett Favre
Written by Chriso, Sunday October 31 2010
Baseball is my favorite sport, and football is a nice diversion once the World Series is over to get me into February. Then soon the pitchers and catchers will report and all will be right in the world. However, watching the Patriots play the Vikings, I can't help but think about watching the end of Brett Favre.
I was not alive when Willie Mays made the over the shoulder catch for the New York Giants. And I was still too young when Mays was falling down when playing for the New York Mets. Still, watching Favre on the stretcher in the game against the Patriots, I wonder if I am watching Mays falling down all over again.
Another comparison to baseball is to compare Favre to Cal Ripken Jr. I think Ripken did great things for the game with his streak, while at the same time it was not in the best interests of the Orioles. In fact, I think there were several times it would have been better for the Orioles if Ripken took a day off.
Favre is part Mays, part Ripken. I am 41, just like Favre. I like watching him and thinking about things I used to do, things I wish I could still do. And then I realize, if I tried to do those things, I probably would end up falling down like Mays.
