Takeru Kobayashi Professional Hot Dog Eater Arrested
Takeru Kobayashi, the greatest hot dog eater in the history of competitive eating, was taken into custody at the annual Nathan's Famous 4th of July hot dog eating contest this weekend.
After Joey Chestnut won the event fvor the second year in a row, Kobayashi rushed up and tried to get on stage but was taken away by police and arrested by the New York Police Department. Kobayashi was charged with resisting arrest, trespass and obstructing governmental administration.
Kobayashi did not participate in this year's event due to some kind of contract dispute he had with Major League Eating.
Major League Eating called Kobayashi 's actions "inappropriate and unfortunate," but according to the rep, “He is a great champ. Nathan's Famous actually tried to get him to come to the event originally. There was a lot of back and forth negotiating but they couldn't resolve it in time of the event."
In the wake of the arrest, Major League Eating has also said that Kobayashi will not be suspended from the world of competitive eating as they are "absolutely not" banning him from future eating competitions regardless of his actions at this year’s event.
Kobayashi held the world record for hot dog eating for nearly six years, and holds several other eating records, and is ranked third in the world for competitive eating according to the International Federation of Competitive Eating.
Last year in the Nathan's contest, Kobayashi reached 64.5 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes, but Joey Chestnut beat him by eating 68 hot dogs and buns in the same time period.
