Injuries Take Toll on Shortened WNBA Rosters

The San Antonio Silver Stars waived injured forward Megan Frazee today and resigned Crystal Kelly. The transaction falls under the league salary cap exemption that is granted when a team is below 10 players who are able to suit up.

Kelly has played four games with San Antonio this season prior to being waived. She had originally been acquired via a trade with the Tulsa Shock in exchange for Shanna Crossley. Frazee is expected to have surgery this week and rehab in San Antonio.

The roster move was necessary since Ruth Riley is already on the shelf after undergoing surgery to repair her broken right pinkie finger. The operation was performed on June 22 and Riley is expected to miss four to six weeks while recovering.

The struggling Los Angeles Sparks will have to do without the services of guard Betty Lennox. Lennox tore the meniscus in her left knee. The nagging injury finally forced Lennox to hang it up for what is expected to be a four to six week recovery period. Lennox’s upcoming surgery leaves the Sparks with 10 players on their roster.

The Seattle Storm is off to an impressive 14-2 start, but suffered a huge scare during Sunday’s game against the Silver Stars. Point guard Sue Bird crumpled to the floor after an injury to her surgically repaired left knee. The WNBA assist leader, 6.2 per game, had to be helped off the floor, but returned to the bench later.

Although the knee responded well to a few off days, Bird sat out last night’s rematch with the Silver Stars due to a bad back. Seattle won both games, but they are anxious to get their playmaker back on the floor to continue their highly successful season.
