Venus Sets At Wimbledon
Written by Christopher Corazon, Tuesday June 29 2010
The women’s side of the tournament at Wimbledon has seen most of the top seeds fall. At the start of the day yesterday, there were 5 former champions of grand slam tournaments. At the start of today, there were only three. Now there is only one. It ended any hopes for an all American final between the Williams sisters at the All England Club.
Those plans were derailed when unranked Tsvetana Pironkova upset Venus Williams 6-2, 6-3. Pironkova had never been beyond the second round of a grand slam event. The 22-year-old Pironkova becomes the first Bulgarian woman to make the semis. She collapsed on her back after the final unforced error eliminated Venus Williams.
In her post match conference, Venus Williams was questioned about continuing her career. “Why wouldn’t I want to pursue this? I’m pretty good at it, most days….for the most part I rock and roll this game. I’ll give it up when I’m terrible.”
Serena Williams defeated Li Na 7-5, 6-3 to advance to her seventh Wimbledon semi in 11 years. She is clearly the favorite to win it all.
