Getting Into UFC by Getting Into the Undisputed Game
Written by Daniel Turner, Monday June 28 2010
When the Undisputed UFC 2009 game was introduced last year some wondered if it would sell. MMA is an acquired taste and whether gamers were willing to understand the nuances of the sport remained to be seen. After the success of Undisputed it was determined that gamers became fans of the sport courtesy of their experiences with the game. Just learning that there is more to MMA than giving and taking a whipping was probably the biggest educational factor of Undisputed ’09.
This year’s version, Undisputed UFC 2010, is even better than the original. It isn’t just another year later game with an updated roster. THQ developers listened to the gaming community and made changes that improved this year’s model. The graphics and animation is crisper and cleaner, but there are tweaks made to the fighting that has this year’s model far and away improved over last year.
New moves, like the crucifix pin used by Matt Hughes on BJ Penn, the gogoplata, Penn’s arm trap rear naked choke and the Peruvian necktie are included. More importantly you can no longer rely on button mashing to escape a submission hold. Now you must incorporate the right analog stick to force your opponent to change the direction of his movements.
As users discover there is more to MMA than meets the eye they will also have to deal with more complexity in the game causing them to rely more on the menu for tips and refreshers on how Undisputed works. Some may find this to be too much work for their gaming pleasure, but if you are willing to take the time to learn the game you will unlock levels that increase the enjoyment and make Undisputed an even better experience.
