Just as in the last world cup, déjà vu has struck for the United States soccer team as they lost 2-1 and were eliminated by Ghana.

Asamoah Gyan’s goal at the start of extra time gave Ghana a 2-1 lead over the United States and there were no last second miracles this time around as Ghana held onto the lead in their second round World Cup match on Saturday.

Once Ghana took the lead they played a masterful game of keep away for the Americans. They also used up significant time in the extra period with players going down with supposed injuries, and just taking their time throughout.

The Americans had a few good chances for yet another miracle finish to tie the game, but any significant rushes either fell short or were excellently defended by Ghana.

The winning shot came in the 93rd minute as Gyan hooked a left-foot shot over the head of U.S. goalie Tim Howard and into the roof of the net. Gyan had latched onto Andre Ayew’s deep ball and maintained his balance as he beat American defenders Carlos Bocanegra and Jay DeMerit before shooting. It was the only goal in the extra time.

Kevin-Prince Boateng had put Ghana ahead early in the game in the fifth minute with a low shot from the edge of the area.

Landon Donovan sent the match into extra time with a penalty kick after Clint Dempsey was fouled in the area at the 62nd-minute.
