Notes From The NBA Draft
Written by Christopher Corazon, Friday June 25 2010
Maybe Paul Allen was watching Donald Trump on reality TV and got too excited. Whatever the reason was, Allen said "You're fired" to Portland Trailblazer's GM Kevin Pritchard. This happened one hour before the draft started. Pritchard continued to operate the team through the draft. It sets the definition for "taking the high road".
The draft itself went as expected with few surprises. Kentucky's John Wall went first to the Washington Wizards and Ohio State's Evan Turner was taken by the 76ers second. Five players from Kentucky were taken in the first round, a new record. Coach John Calipari declared that it was the greatest night in the school's basketball history. So much for the idea that college basketball is a team game and the importance of championships.
Another lesson in the draft was not to stay in school. Only four seniors were taken in the first round, the first was Trevor Booker of Clemson with the 23rd pick. He was drafted by Minnesota, but was traded to Washington, just to show how unwanted seniors are. There was also a decrease in foreign players in the draft.
In the second round, the Heat drafted Da'Sean Butler with the 42nd pick overall. Butler helped lead his West Virginia team to the championship game, but suffered an injury that knocked him down in the draft. Butler has worked hard to make it back this far, and he makes a case for the debate about leaving school early. He stayed, and the injury in his final game clearly cost him lots of money.
