This week Quicksilver crowned the 2010 King of the Groms in an event held at Huntington Beach, CA. The contest is for young, relatively unknown surfers. This year’s winner was Josh Moniz of Hawaii. Moniz topped a field of 48 that not only netted him the title and a $400.00 cash prize, but he will get an expense paid trip to France to compete in the Quicksilver Pro France Global King of the Groms Championship in September.

Moniz was happy to be crowned the King and looks forward to the trip to France. He’ll share the trip with his dad Tony Moniz. Tony is a former surf champion who it appears taught Josh many of the king-sized moves he pulled off when carving the waves in Orange County to secure his title.

The conditions were perfect for the competition and made it a high scoring event for all of the surfers. The 2009 defending champion Andrew Jacobson started out looking like he was going to fight to retain his crown with a stellar first round, but faded fast and never made it to the second heat. Meanwhile it looked like The King was going to have some stiff competition from the royal family as brother Seth Moniz ran up some early big scores.

While bro’ was making progress Josh Moniz used a combination of carves topped with muscular top turns to rack up solid points culminating with a 7.83 in the third heat and a 7 in the fourth to prove without  argument who ruled the waves that day and deserved to be crowned King of the Groms.
