Blackhawks Make Huge Trade

On Wednesday, the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks made a blockbuster trade with the Atlanta Thrashers on Wednesday, moving Dustin Byfuglien, Ben Eager, Brent Sopel and a prospect Akim Aliu to the Thrashers for a first-round pick, a second-round pick, prospect Jeremy Morin and veteran forward Marty Reasoner.

The first and second-round picks that the Blackhawks received in the deal were acquired by the Thrashers in the trade with the New Jersey Devils for Ilya Kovalchuk last February.

The Blackhawks have not confirmed the trade and the trade is pending a call to the league for approval.

Byfuglien was a major force in the Blackhawks run to the Cup, as his work in front of the net was a big part of eliminating the Canucks and Sharks on there way to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Eager and Sopel were a big part of the Blackhawks penalty kill, especially late in the regular season and throughout the playoffs.

The Blackhawks were in an urgent need to lower the teams overall salary as new contract extensions for stars Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith next season would put them in a major salary cap problem. With the trade, the Blackhawks will save just over $5 million in cap space.

The Blackhawks will still have to decide whether to keep forwards Patrick Sharp and Kris Versteeg, both who also have somewhat high salaries.
