Americans Have One Shot to Live up to Hype

The American soccer team has one more shot, one more game, against Algeria in the World Cup on Wednesday to either live up to the hype and make the final 16, or fall flat on their faces and come home short of their goal.

A victory or possibly a tie would move the United States team into the knockout rounds.  Repeat what happened in 2006 in the loss to Ghana that knocked the U.S. team out, it could cost coach Bob Bradley his job and put a big dent in the current excitement that America has for soccer at the moment.

This World Cup started with a come from behind 1-1 tie against England, and a dramatic two goal come from behind tie against Slovenia. This was a game that they appeared to win, but Maurice Edu's 85th-minute goal was disallowed for reasons referee Koman Coulibaly of Mali never did fully explain.

The U.S. has never before faced Algeria, who has not yet scored a goal in this tournament after a 1-0 loss to Slovenia and a 0-0 draw against England. Algeria can only advance with a win.

A win would send the American team to a second-round matchup this weekend with Germany, Ghana, Serbia or Australia, along with excellent television ratings.

If they beat Algeria with France knocked out, and England, Germany, defending champion Italy and Spain no guarantee to reach the knockout stage, the U.S. could find themselves in a somewhat wide-open tournament with a shot to win the whole thing.
