Chicago Sports, Four Down One to Go
Written by Nolan Thomas, Saturday June 19 2010
Being the native born Chicagoan that I am, although I have not lived there for the past 15 years, I will always be a
I cannot help it, it is in my heart. I grew up following The Bears, Cubs, White Sox, Bulls and Blackhawks. Although I am a north-sider and root for the Cubs much more then the White Sox, I do not root against them, unless of course they are playing the Cubs.
Now we get to the topic of this article, four down, one to go.
To my immense joy, and I still remember it like it was yesterday, the Bears defense dominated the National Football league in 1985, shutting out the New York Giants and the Los Angeles Rams on their way to blowing out the New England Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX.
The offense was not too bad either, led by quarterback Jim McMahon and running back Walter Payton, the best overall player in the history of the game.
Then there was Michael Jordon and the Bulls with six NBA championships. Three in row from 1990-1993 and then again from 1995-1998. Led by the best basketball player of all time and coached by one of the best coaches of all time in Phil Jackson.
Jordan did not do it alone as he had a great supporting cast with Scottie Pippen, Bill Cartwright, Horace Grant, John Paxson and B.J. Armstrong, in the first three-peat and Luc Longley, Steve Kerr, Ron Harper, Toni Kukoč and Dennis Rodman in the second three-peat.
Then there was the 2005 White Sox. They finished with a 99-63 record in the regular season and won the American League Central division. Then they breezed through the playoffs winning the American League Division Series 3-0 over the Boston Red Sox, the American League Championship Series 4-1 over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and ended with a four game sweep of the Houston Astros in the World Series.
And then there was this year on the rink with the Blackhawks. They had a regular season record of 52-22-8 and were the number two seed in the Western Conference. In the playoffs, they defeated the Nashville Predators in six games in the first round, before defeating the third seeded Canucks for the second straight year, again in six games.
The Blackhawks then played the top-seeded San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference Finals and swept the series in four straight games to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1992.
They faced the Philadelphia Flyers, and were able to win the series in Game 6 with Patrick Kane scoring the game-winning goal in overtime to take home the Stanley Cup.
As much as all of these titles were great and I will never forget any of these teams or the championships they have brought to me and the city of
Yes, you can stop laughing now; the Cubs have not won a World Series since 1908, 102 years, and have not even been in the World Series since 1945, not even once in my lifetime.
So for a true
Is that too much to ask?
