U.S. has Historic Victory Stolen Away

The United States soccer team rallied from two goals down at halftime to salvage a 2-2 draw with Slovenia on Friday.

However, it should have been a historic victory instead of a tie.

The Americans scored what seemed to have been an incredible comeback winning goal by Maurice Edu at the 86th minute, and as the U.S. players began to celebrate wildly, referee Koman Coulibaly blew his whistle and disallowed the goal for what he perceived to be foul play inside the penalty area.

However, Coulibaly did not give an explanation of his call or who the actual culprit was, just that it was a foul. Even nearly an hour after the game ended, there was confusion in the American camp as to what the exact nature of the foul was.

The team converged on Coulibaly and also surrounded him once the game had ended. An extremely upset Jozy Altidore ranted at the referee and had to be pulled away by teammates before his ranting got him into trouble.

When asked about the call by reporters as he left the stadium, Coulibaly refused to make any comment on his decision.

Landon Donovan insisted the Americans had a historic victory “stolen” from them.

“They stole a goal from us,” said Donovan. “It was a good finish and a good goal. It was the guy’s first World Cup and maybe he got caught up a bit. This is the World Cup and you can’t just take away a goal from a team like that.”

Donovan speculated that Coulibaly did not speak English. But Captain Carlos Bocanegra confirmed that he “spoke French and English just fine.”
