Astros Likely to Keep Stars because no one else Wants Them

Any athlete that plays professional sports desires to do one thing during their career (besides make a boat load of money)—win a championship. For two stars in Houston, that does not look likely to happen this season.

Pitcher Roy Oswalt and first baseman/outfielder Lance Berkman would like nothing better that to win a championship with the club they started with. However, with the sad state of the major league team and the Astros farm system that does not appear likely anytime soon.

Through 65 games of the 2010 season the Astros are 25-40, 11 games out of first in the NL Central. Houston has not been real competitive since losing the World Series in 2005.

With hopes of winning a title before they are done playing, both Oswalt and Berkman have let the team know that they would be open to a trade. Oswalt has said that he is willing to waive his no trade clause while Berkman wants to hold out for a team that is willing to pick up his option for 2011.

The chances of either player finding new home this season is highly unlikely. Both players command to high of a salary to make them appealing to suitors.

Teams interested in Berkman will have to pick up the remaining $8.7 million in 2010 not to mention the $2 million buyout on his 2011 option. Oswalt would cost closer to $25 million for the rest of 2010 and 2011.

Both players were a large part of the team’s post season success from 1997-2005. The Astros will face the Kansas City Royals in Kansas City Wednesday night with Oswalt scheduled to take the mound.
