The Iowa Corn Indy 250 in Newton, IA is the racing event held in the state that produces the largest amount of ethanol and the IZOD Indy Car Series is the only motorsports organization to use 100% renewable and environmentally friendly fuel. Now, along with the green fuel filling their Honda V8’s the IRL can boast of ICM and Green Plains Renewable Energy returning as a sponsor of Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti Autosport.

Hunter-Reay had been sponsored by the ethanol industry in 2007-2008 and he is happy to have them back on board his #37 car. Green Plains is impressed by the driver’s efforts in promoting ethanol and happy that Indy cars race in the state that produces 84 million barrels yearly.  Currently Hunter-Reay is sixth in the championship standings with one win and three top five finishes.

While the ethanol industry was sharing the spotlight with Hunter-Reay Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey was meeting with Iowa Speedway officials for a promotional breakfast. After the meal he got a ride back to his office in a street legal two seater Indy car. The corn industry wanted to use the event and the ride to promote the fact that Indy cars are propelled by 100% ethanol and not a blend of gas.

IRL will continue to promote the fuel on June 17 when Mario Andretti will greet drivers at the Kum & Go gas station at 2110 Guthrie St. in Des Moines. He will be there from 5:30-7:30 and, during his visit, 85 grade ethanol will sell for .85 cents a gallon.
