Welcome Back to Montreal

Sunday was a home coming for both the F1 circuit and one of its drivers. Formula one racing returned to Montreal after a year’s absence brought about by financial disputes between the former promoter and F1 boss Bernie Eccelstone. While the 110,000 fans that crowded the street course were obviously happy to see F1 back in Canada’s most European of cities driver Lewis Hamilton was even more ecstatic.

In 2007 Hamilton won his first pole position and first race at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. For the second time in three visits to Montreal Hamilton pulled off the same double play. Hamilton won on the tight and often treacherous track while his McLaren-Mercedes teammate Jenson Button ran second.

Hamilton can’t explain his good fortune in Montreal outside of his love for the city, its people, the food and the course. He feels he has his car dialed in perfectly every time he runs the circuit. He lists it as his favorite race of the season.

After winning two weeks ago in Turkey and following that up with a successful run at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve Hamilton is atop the driver’s standings with 109 points. Button, who ran second in both races, is second overall with 106 points while former leader, Red Bull Racing’s Mark Webber dropped to third with 103 points.

One of Hamilton’s successful moves Sunday was his choice of tires. He chose a softer tire for the race feeling they would fare better on the difficult track. The Red Bull team chose the harder tire. Webber’s tires began peeling badly by the 50th lap allowing the McLaren-Mercedes team to prove their choice was correct as the slipped by for the 1-2 finish.
