Blackhawks win Stanley Cup
Written by Nolan Thomas, Wednesday June 09 2010
In a Stanley Cup Finals series that was a nail bitter from the first drop of the puck in game one, Patrick Kane scored 4:10 into overtime to give the Chicago Blackhawks their first Stanley Cup since 1961.
After the shot, even though Kane streaked down ice, threw his stick and helmet into the air, it was still in doubt. The puck was hidden in the back of the net, the light did not go on, and no one was sure where the puck had gone. Even the NBC announcers were not sure what had just happened.
However, Patrick Kane, a superlative 21-year-old winger, knew for sure what he had just done and he was soon mobbed by a multitude of overjoyed Blackhawks.
Kane picked up the puck along the wall, and with a quick wrist shot, it zipped past Flyers goalie Michael Leighton and went in on the far side of the goal. It was such a scorching quick score that just to make sure, the officials reviewed it.
It was then official; The Chicago Blackhawks were the 2010 National Hockey League Stanley Cup Champions.
Hawks center and team captain Jonathan Toews won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff Most Valuable Player, and he also received the honor of being the first to hoist the Stanley Cup trophy up over his head.
Next to hoist the Cup was Marian Hossa, who after being on the losing end of the cup finals the last two years with the Penguins and the Red Wings, finally won a title.
Today was the goal that the Blackhawks had set for themselves since the first game of the season, and on June 9, 2010, the goal became reality.
