H.S. Football: Their Victory Dance is the Haka
Professional and college players will trip the light fantastic for doing even the most menial tasks associated with their position. But, high school football would frown on such activity. However, the Trinity team performs a dance prior to the game that is a ritual found in the Tongan roots of several players.
The Haka is a dance from Tonga and is incorporated into the opening exercises of the New Zealand Rugby team. The native dance often intimidates their opposition. The Euless team had a long tradition of having Tongan players on their roster and they too incorporate the Polynesian dance. Like the All Blacks in Rugby, Euless backs up their dancing with plenty of muscle. After all, it takes more than fancy footwork to remain atop the USA Today Top 10.
1. Trinity, Euless, TX: Maybe it is the Polynesian recruits that have been in the program for over 25 years, but Trinity stays on top. They extended their record to 12-0 with a 45-32 win over Plano in Texas Stadium. On Saturday they meet Arlington in the stadium with the hole in the roof.
2. St. Thomas Aquinas, Fort Lauderdale, FL: QB Ryan Becker recorded 3 passing TD’s in the 35-7 pasting of Coconut Creek. On Friday they extend their playoff run against Dillard. With a points scored total of 499 vs. 74 points surrendered, they are heavily favored.
3. Armwood, Seffner, FL: They are 12-0 and advance into the playoffs to face Tampa Bay Tech. Once again, they overpowered the opposition by beating Winter Haven 30-14.
4. Lowndes, Valdosta, GA: These guys wail on you and don’t let you near the red zone. Their 62-21 defeat of Bradwell Institute in the first round of the playoffs is an example of the punishment they dealt in the regular season. On Friday they travel to Loganville to face Grayson. Grayson better have their whirlpools ready for after the game.
5. Centennial, Corona, CA: WR Ricky Marvay had 3 TD passes and returned a punt to run up a huge portion of the 62-7 beating they placed on Yucaipa. The Huskies take their high octane offense on the road this Friday when they face Vista Murrietta. Tryptophan will probably not slow down these kids.
6. Long Beach Poly, Long Beach, CA: It was a close one, but Poly won their first round playoff over Bishop Arnat with a score of 21-17. The boys will get on the bus and take their 11-0 record to Anaheim for a game with Esperanza on Friday. Remember, this is Jesse James of West Coast Chopper’s alma mater.
7. Skyline, Issaquah, WA: QB Jake Heaps continues to prove he belongs at UW by throwing for 204 yds, recording 2 TD’s in the air and running one in for another six points as Skyline stomped Auburn 38-2. Saturday they travel to the brown part of the Evergreen State when they face Ferris in Spokane.
8. Madison County, Madison, FL: Madison’s 35 points scored against Marianna was their lowest total in their last five games. I guess it’s a good thing they blanked the opposition. On Friday they face Pensacola Catholic on the road.
9. Lakeland, FL: The Dreadnoughts played tenacious defense and scored three TD’s via the take away in securing their 48-6 win over Bloomingdale. I think it is safe to say that a team named Bloomingdale had no business on the field with a team nicknamed the Dreadnoughts. On Friday they shake off the extra Thanksgiving Day pounds when they meet Osceola in Kissimmee.
10. South Panola, Batesville, MS: RB Nicholas Parker was the man of the day when he ran for 373 yds and scored 3 TD’s in their 21-14 win over Northwest Rankin. I hope the rest of the team is ready to help out when they travel to Madison Central on Friday.
