The AFL announced their weekly awards on Tuesday and the recipients cover the league’s footprint throughout the country.
Orlando Predators WR Josh Bush was named the JLS Ironman of the Week. The receiver shone brightly for the special teams as he returned two kickoffs for TDs assisting in handing the Tulsa Talons their first home loss. Bush announced his intentions for the game when he returned the opening kickoff for a TD in the Predators 57-54 win.
Veteran WR JJ McKelvey led the Arizona Rattlers to a win over the first place Milwaukee Iron. He finished the game with 14 receptions for 186 yards and five touchdowns. Three of his TDs came in the 4th quarter which helped to send the game into OT and secured the upset win for Arizona. For his efforts McKelvey was named the Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Week.
Iowa Barnstormers DB Tanner Varner earned the Riddell Defensive Player of the Week award when he single handedly attempted to steal a win from the Alabama Vipers. Varner racked up 15 unassisted tackles and three assisted along with two interceptions. Both of his pick offs were converted into TDs by the Barnstormers offence and greatly reduced the deficit in Iowa’s 44-45 loss to Alabama.
Milwaukee WR Tiger Jones earned the Cutters Catch of the Week when he snagged one of his seven receptions while falling into the seats in the Iron’s loss to Arizona. Jones ended the night with 156 yards receiving and 3 TDs.
Cleveland Gladiators DL Tim Cheatwood earned the Nifty TV Playmaker of the Week award for his AFL record setting three fumble recoveries in a 75-39 thrashing of the Utah Blaze while Jacksonville Sharks QB Aaron Garcia became the new leader in TD passes when he recorded number 932 in a win over the Chicago Rush 64-56. Garcia earned the Spalding Highlight of the Week award for his effort.
