Charger Front Office Fighting Fire with Fire

With labor negotiations looming between the owners and players after the current contract expires following the 2010 season, some players and owners are already looking to play hardball.

Wide receiver Vincent Jackson and offensive tackle Marcus Neil have been in negotiations with the Chargers and are looking to get paid more in 2010. So far, the Chargers have not seemed too eager to open up the proverbial checkbook.
Both players have been tendered offers by the team. If they were to accept them, Jackson would get paid $3.268 million and McNeill $3.168 million. Neither has expressed much interest in signing the offers.
If that ends up being the case, then both Jackson and McNeil are ready to sit out training camp and possibly longer.  However, if they do not sign their tendered offers by June 15, the team can reduce the offers.
Jackson would see his offer drop to $583,000 while McNeil’s would fall to $600,000. McNeil is expected to eventually sign his tender, but then holdout.
The Chargers are prepared to at least do without McNeil if necessary. According to reports, the Chargers are set to sign veteran tackle Tra Thomas. Thomas played primarily as a back-up in Jacksonville last season after starting 165 of 166 career games over 11 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. Thomas was also a three time pro bowler while in Philadelphia.
San Diego will kick off the 2010 season against the Kansas City Chiefs on September 13 for Monday Night Football.
