Drosselmeyer Pulls Off Upset at Belmont Stakes
Written by Bob Whalon, Saturday June 05 2010
Long-shot Drosselmeyer over came long odds to pull off the upset win at the Belmont Stakes on Saturday in the final leg of the Triple Crown. At 13-1 Drosselmeyer defeated Fly Down by three-quarters of a length in front of 45,243 at Belmont Park in New York.
Drosselmeyer, owned by Winstar Farm, won in 2:31.57. The son of Distorted Humor also gave jockey Mike Smith his first Belmont win in his 13th try.
Third place finisher, First Dude, set the pace for most of the 1 1/2 miles, but was overtaken in the final stretch. Smith won the race by keeping his long-striding horse in the clear for most of the race. He eased Drosselmeyer to the outside for the run down the backstretch. Once outside the 3-year old colt reeled in First Dude and then held off a late charging Fly Down.
Game on Dude was fourth, followed by Uptowncharliebrown, Say Put, Intcractif, Stately Victor, Ice Box, Make Music for Me, Dave in Dixie and Spangled Star. After the race Uptowncharliebrown was disqualified for a weight violation. The horse lost his lead weight pad during the race and failed to carry the required 126 pounds.
Drosselmeyer had underachieved this year, but in his first try in a Triple Crown race, and with Smith aboard for the first time, the colt turned on the speed and came away with the win.
Winstar Farm also owns Kentucky Derby winner, Super Saver, who along with Preakness winner Lookin At Lucky didn't run in the final leg of the Triple Crown.
Drosselmeyer's win means that it's now 32 years and counting without a Triple Crown winner.
