Iowa running back Jewel Hampton was arrested for public intoxication and being underage inside of a liquor establishment early Saturday after he allegedly was involved in fights at an Iowa City bar.

Hampton, who would be in the competition for Iowa's starting running back spot this fall, was arrested Saturday at 1:46 a.m. at Vito's, a restaurant and bar located close to the schools campus. Police responded to a report from the Vito's staff that a large fight had broken out in the back of the bar.

Hampton was booked into the Johnson County jail at 2:42 a.m. and released at 3:15 a.m.

"I am aware of the incident involving Jordan Bernstine and Jewel Hampton Friday evening and at this time I am in the process of gathering all the facts concerning the incident," Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said in a statement. "Until I have all the facts, I'll have no further comment and the incident will be handled internally."

Staff of the restaurant along with patrons of the bar told police that Hampton, 20, had been causing problems. Hampton was given a preliminary breathalyzer test at 2:35 a.m. that showed a blood-alcohol level of .091.

Based on their investigation, the police determined that Hampton was actively involved in several physical confrontations inside the bar. In Iowa City, people under 21 are not permitted to be at a bar after 10 p.m.

Bernstine, 21, a cornerback, was arrested along with Hampton and charged with public intoxication. Since Bernstine was of legal drinking age, he will not face the underage charge.

Bernstine had a preliminary breathalyzer test that showed a blood-alcohol level of .127.

Hampton was the projected starter in 2009 after rushing for 463 yards and seven touchdowns as a true freshman in 2008, but he missed all of last season with a knee injury after he hurt his knee during voluntary workouts in July and then reinjured it in preseason camp. He participated in spring practice this season.

Underage drinking is a bogus charge, the low drinking age contributes to binge drinking on campuses and creates many other problems, but the legal system is able to create charges and revenue with court fees...
