Romeo to bring the Love and the Defense
Written by Travis Pulver, Thursday June 03 2010
The name Romeo is most often attributed to the famous star-crossed lover from Shakespearean lore. The Kansas City Chiefs hope it can soon be attributed to more sacks by their defense instead.
Romeo Crennel will be the new defensive coordinator for the Chiefs, their third one in three years, a unit that got an NFL low 10 sacks in 2008 and only 22 (good enough for second t last) in 2009. For the Chiefs to move out of the league cellar an improved pass rush is one of the many things they will need in order to make that happen.
“That’s a clear-cut goal of ours of an area that’s got to improve, to at least get pressure on the quarterback,” Chiefs coach Todd Haley said. “Not necessarily getting sacks and that statistic, but we’ve got to create pressure and ultimately create minus plays.” (Yahoo)
So far in the 2010 off-season the Chiefs have not made any moves to acquire different talent for the front seven. In fact, the only change has been hiring the former Cleveland Brown head coach.
In Cleveland his defensive units were not exactly the best; the last three years he was there they ranked among the league worst.
