Blown Call Blows Perfect Game for Tigers

On a blown call with two outs in the ninth inning where replays clearly showed the runner was out at first, Armando Galarraga of the Detroit Tigers lost his bid for a perfect game against the Indians on Wednesday night.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland immediately left the dugout and argued the call with first base umpire Jim Joyce, who was surrounded by several Tiger players also arguing the blown call. The Tigers did win the game 3-0.

Galarraga (2-1) was in complete control throughout the night and on track for the third perfect game of the season. Then Donald's groundball became the flash point of the night, and perhaps the season.

After center fielder Austin Jackson made a spectacular catch on Mark Grudzielanek's leadoff fly in the ninth, Mike Redmond grounded out, and Donald came up with two outs.

Donald hit a bouncer that first baseman Miguel Cabrera cleanly fielded to his right. He took his time and made an accurate throw to Galarraga who was covering the bag.

Replays show that the ball appeared to be in Galarraga's glove just before Donald made it to first base.

But Joyce, a veteran umpire, made a nonchalant safe call and you could hear a pin drop in Comerica Park.

The crowd started to boo and Galarraga merely smiled and went back to work and quickly retired Trevor Crowe for the final out and a one-hit shutout.

After the final out, Joyce faced a mob of hostile Tigers, led by Leyland, and he was booed loudly by the crowd of 17,738 as he walked off the field.

I was watching this live, and just couldn't believe it, what a terrible call. Do you think this would've happened @ Yankee Stadium, or Fenway Park? NO WAY!!

just a terrible situation. maybe im too emotional but i dont know how galarraga gets over that...it's almost tough to watch. poor kid- feel sorry for the ump too. I cant help thinking, though, that since it was a 3-0 game(not like one run makes a difference) you have to be thinking tie goes to the pitcher here...
